Legend Chapter 198

Here’s Chapter 198,

Rei finally leaves Baar and begins the journey back to Gilm.

Apologies that this chapter came out slightly late, there were a few things I was setting up which I will talk about.
So a lot of you have probably realised by now, but practically speaking, I stand effectively 0% chance of ever catching up with the current chapter of the Legend webnovel that the author has written up to.
I’m enjoying translation still, but the fact that I will never catch up has sapped a bit away of my motivation.
I’m not at the point where I can’t stand the story, because I would just drop if that were the case, but it does feels like I’m trying to do the impossible.
I’ve talked about it with a few other translators and they’ve given me some suggestions which I’m going to put up on a poll with a link below.

If most of you don’t mind that I will probably never finish the series, I don’t mind continuing to translate the webnovel either.

Another option is that I can start to translate the light novel version instead.
If this is the case, I would likely translate from volume 1 again, but I think it would be worth starting from the beginning as the light novels are more polished and have some slight story differences.

A third option is that I drop Legend and work on some other series that is slightly more manageable.

Any decision I make will likely be at the end of an WN arc, and as this arc ends at chapter 201, I thought it would be an appropriate time to say this.
I will continue to link the poll until the release of the last chapter of the arc.

Best would be if you translated until some else offer to take over or to join in translating.

I would be okay with the ligth novel if you started translating from where you translated web novel and later if you have time also translated Light novel from the beginning.

Also, I hope that at this pace you don’t catch the web novel if you do it would mean that web novel is finished, and I never want my favourite novels to end.

Thanks for the chapter. I personally don’t mind you continuing the series even if you aren’t able to catch up. There’s a chance that it won’t be picked up or even if it is picked up, the translation rate may be slower for that translator. I think your familiarity with the novel helps build the characters and their interactions

Unless someone has asked to take over so they can release at a faster rate or know of someone who would be able to keep consist quality and faster releases then I see no point in switching. The LN chapters are generally longer to translate and a lot of web novels I know of are released weekly. Therefore, it’s highly unlikely to catch up with those web novels as well. Unless there’s a great web novel that you’re passionate about and want to bring some attention to, I think you’d rather stick with Legend.

whats the main difference between the web novel and light novel? is it just a lot of the fluff cut out and more main story? Cause i definitely enjoy this story and don’t want you to stop translating so if the light novel actually progresses the story faster and is more manageable to you I personally wouldn’t mind the switch. I want to see Rei meet back up with Elena and just more progression honestly. so if the light novel does that im all for it

There are some minor differences between the two in terms of description of some events but I don’t think it changes too much in terms of main story line. I suspect the LN may cut down on the filler but I’m not sure on that. Time to Rei meeting up with Elena probably won’t change whether I translate the WN or LN.

ahhh ok. well this is definitely my favorite novel and im surprised its not more well known or liked due to how well written and translated it is. But you do do this without getting paid so whatever you decide I’ll respect i just hope its to keep translating this lol. Not related to the decision but have you read far ahead from where you’re currently at with the translations? if so hows the story?

I actually haven’t read any further ahead ahaha.
For some reason I feel I have more motivation if I read as I translate. However, I have read ahead on story arcs. There will be 4 short arcs covering the events during winter before we immediately kick into high gear with spring and the Bestir Empire war arc, which is where Rei should meet back up with Elena.

I cant respond to the other reply but that makes sense. what you could do to (and i dont know if this would make it easier or better for you) but you could try summarizing multiple filler chapters or skipping them to kind of cut down on the deficit if you continue to translate the web novel but feel the gap is too big. 1800 chapters is a lot to catch up regardless of the rate you translate much less if you do it with only 1 person. idk if you’d like that but thats another option.

Honestly translating the LN for your health might be better because you feel like you are gaining more ground on the author’s latest volume haha. Furthermore light novels have that little more polish to the story and really hope Rei meets up with Elena again faster in the ln despite you saying not 🙂

If there are multiple arcs to catch up i’d say wn would be better it would take a while to recatch the tl if you switched to ln plus you would be doing the same thing over again even if there are minor differences which would probably sap you more then knowing you cant catch up. As a bonus if someone shows interest in picking it up, even if they don’t work with you you could split the work by doing a arc while they do another alternating arcs rather then ch (assuming your fine with sharing the translating) p.s never find the alternating ch works that well, usually one ends up falling behind or go to far ahead tl something the other was working on (so if it’s arcs it doesn’t matter if you’re ahead or behind) p.s.s plus that way you can get traffic from each others site improving both. p.s.s.s(think thats how it works) If you catch up to the releases then you would be able to tl the arcs the other did bringing it to your quality

you say you’d never catch up, but if you don’t stop translating it and the author stops making new chapters, wouldn’t you eventually get there? lol, either way, go with what you’re heart tells you~

Not sure if you are aware but as of typing this reply to you the WN currently has 2037 chapters with the author still writing a chapter on a daily basis most of the time

I wasn’t aware, but much like another comment suggests, I’d rather wait till the ends of time for someone doing this well than if someone else picks up where Silent leaves off and the quality is much worse.
ultimately though, I’ll go where they go. if they decide to do the LN ill just start the series over, if not, Ill keep reading here. I’m not super picky I just like to read~

technically isn’t it good that the translators will not feasibly get caught up with the author until the books are finished? because then there is no scenario where you catch up and have to wait for months to begin translating again and you can produce relatively consistent uploads more or less thanks to the abundance of content already written. no one wants you the translator to rush through all the chapters and upload them all at once just for us all to be stuck with nothing else for 6 months to a year take your time

I personally say continue with the web novel. If Legend gets popular enough they it may get liscensed in English so the light novel may get translated in the future anyways, and I think it would suck if that happens and you lose motivation.

Some series do quite well with multiple translators alternating chapters, so you could stick to 1 per week & have other people do 1 each as well.

Some translators may also skip ahead a bit & translate a batch, if they feel like alternating may be tripping over each other.

To be honest, it mainly depends on how well multiple translators can work with each other. When it works well, it’s great, I actually started by helping Natsulus with translations of Magicraft Meister. The real issue is when the cooperation doesn’t really work out, stuff quickly goes downhill from there.

As a leech reader, I’d like you to continue. But as someone who has a similar passion, I think you should decide for yourself.

If I’m not mistaken, this is your second time voicing these concerns. Don’t force yourself just because of the strawpoll results, most of us won’t even leave a weekly “thank you” in the comments. Just do what you really want to.

No worries, thank you for your thoughts. Honestly, I still enjoy working on the series. The main reason I put up the poll was because I know some readers do feel a bit put off if they know that the translations will never catch up with the raws. I say that being such a reader myself ahaha.
If I ever lose motivation for the series, I will just drop it, because I shouldn’t consider it a burden. But if the readers don’t mind sitting in for the long haul that will probably never end, I don’t really mind either, it does give me a bit of motivation ahaha.

    Thanks 4 the chapter!

Personally I want you to continue. If you want to, you can work with another translator. One working odd numbered chapters and another working even numbered chapters, or something similar.
I really don’t want this series picked up by those machine translator groups that don’t even bother with editing.

I wouldn’t mind mtl picking it up since there would be english tl then, as long as when a real tl picks it up they continue where the last tl left off

I don’t mind MTL too if they bother to edit the translation so it would at least be bearable. I don’t even mind if the accuracy sucks, as long as they edit it enough so I can bare reading the translations.

Why is there no “joint forces with other translators to continue the WN translation” option?

But anyway, you have done a good job translating this up until bow, quality is thumbs up as well so I would prefer you to continue it. What matters is that the translation continues, but would be great if you can get chummy with fellow translators and get help with it.

Or if you don’t like the idea of other TL posting Legends in their own site, there’s also an option to uh… Enslave someone to do it here.

Joint translations have always been a bit of an eh.
Short term cooperation is fine, Frozen has helped out for a few chapters actually. But when it’s a project as long as Legend, it takes some dedication to work with someone else on it for what will likely be years of translation.
But as you mentioned, maybe I should find some……volunteers to slave away with me XD.

    Hi,
    Thanks for the hard work.
There is an other solution. Have you thought about cooperating with another translator?
This way you could continue to translate this webnovel, albeit partially, and catch up with the author.
Either way, this is a great series, and you make good quality translation, thanks.
And one of my favourite novels is at the rate of one chapter a month, which is agonising. Once a week isn’t so bad 😉

    Thx for the chapter!!

You should just go with whatever you want, because we don’t really have any right to say anything about it. It would be the best if you were able to catch up, but I already knew that it was probably impossible if this nobel was not taken over by a big group. So don’t worry, and keep going like that!!!

P.S. I’m sorry if my english isn’t good, but I learned english with manga and novel 😁 so my grammar is probably full of error.

I don’t mind if you don’t catch up to the most recent chapter, I just enjoy watching the story progress.

Also, April 1st is a day I look forward to every year solely because of your translations. XD
Makes me wonder what style will be used this year.

Still holding out for an ebonics version.

That aside, thanks for the chapter.

since the WN has 2000+ chapters, where only gonna get to end up reading 10% of it huh, tbh, i want to continue reading this so i’d prefer that you’d translate till there’s a new translator but i guess that’s impossible if it’s become a large burden on your body and mental health, translating that much chapters is seriously damn hard and tedious. anyway, you do what you want translator-sama! you have my and other people’s support in your decisions no matter which path you take, you held this out for quite long! you did great.

regarding the LN, i guess, starting from Volume 1 is quite good, y’know, i’ve reread legend for atleast 4 times or more now catching up to every latest on those times, so another reread aint bad, it’s actually nice.

    Anyway, Thanks for the chapter!

Better stick to the web novel version. Unless Legend is like Overlord that has a big difference between WN and LN or Legend is a WN that was halted do to it transitioning into LN, it’s usually advisable to stick to WN cuz LN’s have massive potential for DMCA headaches.

I say continue the WN, you´re familiar with the story, characters etc. which a new TL probably wouldn´t be. Even if someone else picks it up, s/he won´t necessarily finish it either, there are so many cases where someone picked a story up and stopped after a few chapters.

Besides, i can just read the Manga if i want to experience the LN, since it should be based on that.
