Chapter 57 – Once in a While, There’s a Peaceful Quest

“Don’t worry, they’re nice and quiet guys.”

Saito answered when I asked him about the D functions in the car on the way to the quest. After all, it can be said that when it came to fighting against modern functions, I was always on the verge of death.

“D functions? Don’t worry, they’re fine.”

Inoue, who had returned, also seemed at ease. Was I overthinking that this optimism was nothing more than raising flags?

I wasn’t sure if I should take Saito and Inoue’s words seriously, but when I arrived, the figures sitting there were definitely quiet functions. I was a bit taken aback by their appearance though…

They had an oblong head attached to a slender neck and were small and stubby, almost like the body of a toddler. They looked just like the alien in the Spielberg movie.

“DSUM.”

Inoue processed it by touching her index finger with the outstretched index finger of the DSUM. The DSUM disappeared into the cell with a glow.

“Ouch-, uwa, what’s with this guy?”

I suddenly felt a nudge at my lower back and saw a bug. It was a bug, but it was the kind of thin, long-bodied alien that could be seen in the coffee room in Men in Black.

“It’s DCOUNT. It means no offense, it just wants to touch you. Let’s deal with it.”

At Saito’s prompt, I saw the stick bug waiting with its mouth raised.

“DCOUNT.”

As I gingerly touched it and processed it, the bug turned translucent and disappeared with a glow.

After that, several more D functions appeared. All of them looked like aliens, but as expected, they were calm and peaceful and we were able to process them without needing any dangerous weapons.

“Wow, it really is peaceful. I wish quests were always like this.”

As I spoke casually, I felt the space at the edge of my vision distort slightly.

“Hm? What is that?”

As I turned to look.

“TAKAHASHIIII!!! FALL BAAAAACK!!!!!”

As Saito’s loud voice came from behind me, I looked back in surprise. Suddenly, there was a strong impact at my chest. My body staggered and my vision became blurred. I could see red liquid dripping down my belly and to my knees. Was this…my blood? My strength faded. I couldn’t stand. My consciousness left there.
