31. Nerf

“What is this?”

A wide variety of weapons were lined up inside a glass case.

From knives to sniper rifles, grenades and radar-like devices.

There didn’t seem to be anything in common between them, whether it was manufacturer, age, usage, or design

“These weapons are all ones that were hit by a phenomenon known as Nerf.”

“Nerf?”

“Nerf is a mysterious phenomenon that is rarely seen throughout the galaxy. It’s a sudden weakening of a particular type of weapon.”

“What kind of weakening?”

“The cause of this phenomenon is unknown, but it has been confirmed that it can result in a variety of changes such as decreases in reactor power output, reduced elasticity, increased operating costs, and defective thermal systems. It is said that this phenomenon occurs to the whole galaxy at the same time. The more popular the weapon, the more likely it was to suffer from this phenomenon.”

“So it’s not like its weaknesses were exposed as a result of widespread use?”

“No. It has been proven that the actual performance deteriorates.”

It’s a mystery.

“Some say it is the whims of god. Others say that it is punishment for weapons that have killed too many people.”

“What an annoying god.”

“In any case, this phenomenon has prevented the creation of general purpose weapons that can withstand long-term use, so new weapons were developed and introduced one after another. It is also a phenomenon that greatly supported the development of the arms industry.”
